IT’S GREEN WEEK IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Miami-Dade County Hosts a Week of Events from April 16 to April 22.
(MIAMI, April 14, 2009) – Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez and the Board of County Commissioners have declared April 16 to April 22, Earth Week in Miami-Dade County. Residents can be green with free events and volunteer opportunities for the whole family. From Ecofashion shows to Earthfest 2009 to Baynanza, Miami-Dade County residents and visitors are invited to “Be Green”.
“This week offers County residents and visitors a great opportunity to become aware and get involved in helping the environment,” said Mayor Carlos Alvarez. “As a community we can do our part to take care of South Florida and leave behind a better place for future generations.”
Earth Week events will take place across the County and throughout the month of April, including:

Event: Ecofashion JAM@MAM
Date: April 16, 2009
Time: 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Location: Miami Art Museum Plaza

Summary: In celebration of National Earth Month, Miami Art Museum will roll out the green carpet with Green Art USA.org to host an eco-art fashion show of clothing created from organic, recycled and sustainable materials. In addition to live models, mannequins draped in wildly-inventive, recycled ball gowns formed of truly exotic materials, such as construction fencing, will grace the plaza throughout the evening. Designers whose work will be on view include Catherine Cathers, Mickey Dobovan, Rosita Hurtado, Melissa Kolbusz, Jenny Lynn, Emilio Uribe, Luis Valenzuela and Lisu Vega. Hair and Make up will be by Emilio Uribe. Green Art USA.org will also present Eco-mmunities, a cross-cultural art installation aimed at reducing negative environmental practices and encouraging sustainability.

Event: Miami-Dade’s Water Use Efficiency & Soil Moisture Sensor Training Workshop
Date: April 17, 2009

Event: Earthfest 2009

Summary: The day-long event will feature “green” vendors offering earth-friendly products such as clothing made from eco-friendly materials, accessories and gifts made from recycled newspaper, eco-friendly products for children and infants, the Smart Car, an electronics recycling center, environmental educational organizations, vegetarian food vendors, and much more. Event: Natural Area Tours at the Deering Estate

Join Education and Interpretive Staff Members, and walk in the footsteps of Florida’s first inhabitants. Hike through a lush forest of tropical hardwood trees and clinging vines down the Native American footpath that, near the end of the nineteenth century, would become the first Cutler Road/Ingram Highway. Comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent are recommended for this one-and-a-half mile excursion. This tour begins on the front porch of the Richmond Cottage.
