“Past Meets Present: Applying the Southern Vernacular
Precedent of Yesterday to the Designs of Today”

Andrew Cogar, University of Miami School of Architecture alumnus and partner with Historical Concepts, an Atlanta-based traditional architecture firm, delves into the pages of the firm's new book, Coming Home: the Southern Vernacular House. He will take you into new and restored homes, from simple cottages to gracious estates, and explain how the rich architectural heritage of the south has helped define his firm’s architectural vocabulary and distinct aesthetic style. He will explore architectural patterns of the past and discuss how they have diverged into unique local and regional interpretations ranging from the Low Country to the Treasure Coast.

Mr. Cogar graduated from the School of Architecture in 1996 and joined Historical Concepts in 1999. Since that time he has achieved the distinction of being one of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “40 under 40,” highlighting Atlanta’s rising business leaders. During his tenure with Historical Concepts, he has won numerous awards, including those from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), Period Homes magazine, and Southern Living Home Awards. He is on the national board of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and is a founding member of the Atlanta chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism. He has lectured and served as a guest critic at the University of Miami and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and has received the University of Miami School of Architecture Award for Alumni Service.

We’ve Always Done It That Way!

How often have you heard the phrase, ‘we’ve always done it that way’? It is a secure answer for things in our lives we may not want to change.
When I hear the phrase ‘we always done it that way’, the story about ‘the ham and the pan’ comes to mind.

One day a young girl was helping her mother bake a ham. In preparing to put the ham in the baking pan, the mother cut off the edges. The young girl asked her mom, ‘why did you do that’. Her mother replied, ‘I don’t know, this is what I was taught’.
Together they called the young girls grandmother and asked the question; but got the same answer, ‘‘I don’t know, this is what I was taught’. So they pressed on and called the young girls great grandmother.

They asked the great grandmother the question of ‘why do you trim the edges off the ham before putting it in the baking pan’. Great grandmother had a reason…know what it was? Her pan was too small!!
So for generations, her daughter, and her grand daughter were trimming the edges off the ham, without knowing why!

Now in their defense, maybe the ham they were making was also too big for their pan (I know some of you may be thinking that, especially Robert), but the point is, they didn’t know why they were doing it.
So what’s the application?

In each of our personal and corporate lives, there are things we are doing, because ‘we’ve always done it that way’. There was a valid reason at one time, but we have not taken a step back to see if something needs to change.
Here’s the exercise…

1. Identify an activity or process in your company that is critical to the success of the organization
2. Write down the entire process – each and every step
3. Have a team question each step for the purpose of understanding the reason for each action
4. Ask the all-important question, ‘why are we doing it that way?’ or ‘is there a better way to be doing this?’
5. Redefine the process and document the new step by step procedure
6. Implement for a couple of weeks
7. Monitor the progress and effectiveness of the new way of doing things
8. Make changes if necessary
9. Repeat the process in a year
10. Pick another activity and start at number 1

A special visitor will join us tomorrow afternoon to lecture on The House in Habana: Domestic Typologies in the Historic Center.

Dr. Madeline Menendez, Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana Colegio Universitario San Geronimo, will speak to faculty, students and staff of the School of Architecture Wednesday, March 21 in Glasgow Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The event is being sponsored by the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Florida Chapter; St. Augustine Baracoa Friendship Association; the American Institute of Architects; Fundacion Amistad; Flagler College; and the University of Miami School of Architecture.

Dr. Menendez, who has been involved as an architect in conservation efforts in La Habana with both the CENCREM as well as the Office of the Historian of the City of La Habana and is presently a professor at the Colegio Universitario de San Geronimo, will lecture on Neo-Classical Architecture in Habana in the XIX and XX Centuries. From the end of the 1700’s to the early republic in the first half of the XX Century, Neo-Classical Architecture was perhaps the predominant architectural style in Cuba and would yield excellent examples in the related fields of Urban Design, Interior Design, Craftsmanship and Landscape Architecture. In the XX Century, Neo Classical Architecture in Cuba parallels architecture practice in the United States, in the work of such offices as McKim Mead and White and Schutze and Weaver for instance, and is a living testimony of a shared cultural patrimony between our two countries.

“LEED”ing Luxury: Green Resorts & Hotels

The USGBC South Florida Emerging Professionals would like to announce the 2012 Natural Talent Design Competition. This year’s local competition incorporates not only elements of sustainability, but partners with the USGBC Hospitality committee, but with key players in the green movement in our local community. Such partners include Cambean Hospitality (co-sponsor), Greater Miami & the Beaches Hotel Association, Miami-Dade Office of Sustainability, and Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce.

South Florida’s tourism industry was one of the hardest hit in the recent recession. One of the ways to revitalize the industry and stimulate our local economy is to attract more corporate clientele. This year’s competition is called “LEED”ing Luxury: Green Resorts & Hotels. We aim to restructure the LEED Rating System to be more accommodating to new and construction and renovations of hotels and resorts in South Florida. We are also looking to have participants help with the renovation of one of the classic boutique hotels – The Carlton Hotel, which is undergoing a major LEED renovation later this year.

We have gone above and beyond any prizes we have ever offered for the local competition this year.
• Third place prize is dinner and a one-night stay for each team member and a guest at one of Cambean Hopitality’s premier hotels.
• Second place prize is registration costs to attend USGBC Greenbuild , our international conference and expo for sustainability, in San Francisco in November 2012.
• Overall prize is a chance to present at Greenbuild, have your new LEED rating system submitted to USGBC national for credits to be considered in the launch of LEED 2015, and $5,000!!!!

Deadline to register for the competition is March 30th, 2012. Submission deadlines are in May and September. Jack Meyer, former Commodore of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, was the project engineer for the construction of the Ralph Middleton Munroe Marine Stadium from its inception in 1961 through completion in 1963.

While at Dignum Engineers, Jack considered the Marine Stadium the most difficult project of his career. All of the other engineers refused to work on this assignment.

When the Marine Stadium was built, it was considered the longest span of cantilevered concrete in the world. Due to Jack's brilliant effort, the Stadium has withstood almost half century of neglect and is now destined for restoration.

The event is co-sponsored by the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club.

Renowned Architect and Urban Planner Andres Duany will lecture at the SOA on March 5, 2012

On Monday, March 5, 2012, the School of Architecture’s Center for Urban & Community Design (CUCD) will present a lecture by Andres Duany, renowned architect and urban planner, on the subject of Classicism. The title of the lecture is Heterodoxia Architectonica which explores the future of Classicism.

Here is an excerpt from Mr. Duany’s remarks on Classicism on the occasion of he and UM SOA Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk receiving the Driehaus Prize in 2008:
“Will this generation bore deeper into refinement and elitism, or will it endeavor to spread classical architecture outwards to a broad, democratic, indeed populist, future? Will they continue reprinting ever more esoteric treatises, or will they write new ones conceived to serve, not the 16th or even the 20th century, but the future which is upon us? To explain what I mean, please permit me a rudimentary example. How can there be a viable canon of architecture that is incapable of producing an opening wider than it is high… I would propose a new ethos – one no longer dedicated to the polishing of the classical canon of Vitruvius, Palladio and Vignola, but to supplementing that canon. Because this process cannot be allowed to devolve into neo-postmodernist dissipation, it should still be based on the authority of masters and masterpieces. First, we must transcend the closed historic treatises, to rescue that which was discarded in the reductive process of writing them. Then we must recover to our side those transitional 19th- and 20th century architects who have been assigned to the modernist camp — where they reside as the foundation of their authority — when they are, in fact, the last great flowering of classicism. An expanded canon would include newly drawn plates alongside Vignola’s: the Orders of masters such as Gilly, Soane, Thompson, Garnier, Perret, Hoffman, Loos, Asplund, Piacentini, Terragni, Stern, Graves, Porphyrios and Rob Krier. This treatise would claim an enormous amount of new territory for classicism. We are almost there. We have only to climb one last Everest.”

Andres Duany received his undergraduate degree in architecture and urban planning from Princeton University and a Master’s of architecture from the Yale School of Architecture. Duany was co-founder of the Miami firm Arquitectonica, and in 1980, Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk founded Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ). Duany is a co-founder and emeritus board member of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) since 1993. In 2001, he and Plater-Zyberk were awarded the Vincent Scully Prize by the National Building Museum and in 2008 the Richard H. Driehaus Prize. Mr. Duany has co-authored several books including: Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream; The New Civic Art; and Garden Cities: Theory & Practice of Agrarian Urbanism.

The lecture on Monday, March 5, will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon in the University of Miami School of Architecture Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center, 1215 Dickinson Drive, Coral Gables Campus. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

BACKGROUND: On January, 24, the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority (MSEA) approved a Resolution and Memorandum of Understanding between Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, the Miami City Commission and MSEA. This legislation now represents a first step to the creation of a partnership which will lead to the restoration and operation the Marine Stadium. The matter is now before the Miami City Commission and approval is expected shortly.

The Marine Stadium initiative, which started in 2008, has now attracted national and international support. The leaders above will discuss the importance of the Marine Stadium and next steps in the plans for restoration.
